A specialist track, separate from viva & thesis support

Bulgakov, Soviet & Russian archival consultancy

Independent research consultancy for anyone working with rare Russian-language archival material, Soviet-era theatrical documents, Soviet cultural history, or the life, work, and international reception of Mikhail Bulgakov.

This sits apart from my core PhD viva and thesis feedback services. It's for researchers, biographers, and cultural historians who need archival or subject-matter expertise, not doctoral mentorship.

A note on this work

Studying Russian and Soviet culture carries real weight in the current moment. I approach this work critically, not uncritically. My own teaching has involved decolonising the curriculum to include Russophone authors from marginalised backgrounds, and I'm alert to how "Russian culture" has often been used as a tool of imperial narrative.

I stand with Ukraine, unambiguously, and I don't take on work that would ask me to set that context aside.

How I can help

I advise researchers, biographers, and cultural historians on transcribing and analysing Soviet-era theatrical documents, and on the broader context of Russian and Soviet cultural history.

  • Document transcription & analysis: deciphering, transcribing, and translating handwritten manuscripts, typescripts, and peripheral published Russian-language materials
  • Contextual analysis: situating archival finds within tamizdat networks, Soviet theatrical history, and the Anglophone reception of Russian and Soviet writers
  • Soviet cultural history: broader guidance on Soviet-era cultural production, censorship, and reception, beyond theatre alone
  • Bulgakov's life and work: biographical research, his body of work, and its staged productions in Britain and the USA, translation history, and international reception, 1919–present day

Background

My doctoral research mapped 90 years of Anglophone staged productions of Mikhail Bulgakov's work, drawing on archival material from Columbia University's Rare Book & Manuscript Library, the Glenny Collection at UCL, the National Theatre Archive, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Sterling Memorial Library and the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library at Yale, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, and the National Library of Wales.

Who this is for

Academics, biographers, theatre companies, translators, cultural historians, and journalists or documentary producers working on Bulgakov, Soviet-era theatre, or Russian-language archival sources, whether you need a single question answered or ongoing support across a longer project.

Example projects

  • Verifying a manuscript's authorship. A biographer sends a handwritten letter attributed to Bulgakov. I assess the handwriting, paper, and content against verified samples and what's documented of his life and habits.
  • Tracing a translation's history. A theatre company preparing a new production wants to know how a particular scene has been translated differently across English-language productions since the 1960s, and why those choices were made.
  • Contextualising an archival find. A researcher has located an unpublished document in a Soviet-era collection and needs help placing it within the broader tamizdat network and political context of the period.
  • Fact-checking for a documentary. A production company needs a biographical claim about Bulgakov's life verified against primary sources before it goes to air.

Pricing

£85/hour, or a fixed project fee

A fixed fee suits a clearly scoped task like the examples above; hourly suits ongoing or open-ended research support. I'll recommend whichever fits once I understand the project.
